Reagan’s Birthday With Jonah Goldberg

Yesterday was the 97th birthday of the great Ronald Reagan. To commemorate the day, some friends and I attended Jonah Goldberg’s lecture at Oglethorpe University. He was speaking on Liberal Fascism and its historical roots – which just happens to be the theme of the book that he has just published.

The attendance was not what I had hoped. Then again, there was very little media coverage of the event other than a few blog posts and a press release by the school. Some of the young people seemed to be there for a class, as they departed before the question period but right after the speech. I have never been a fan of forced attendance at these functions, yet the topic is an important one not taught in most schools.

The speech itself was delightful, even with Jonah’s constant head-cold and need for water (I am amazed he did not need a bladder break mid-speech). He was warm and humorous, yet did not belittle the subject matter. The event should be listed as a success. Jonah graciously signed books, and forgave me for walking in on him in the men’s room (lock the door next time!).
